Laser prostate surgery in Medellín
HoLEP for an enlarged prostate, without incisions
Laser prostate surgery removes the tissue that blocks the flow of urine, through the urethra and without skin incisions. It is indicated when an enlarged prostate does not improve with medication or causes complications. MDE Care is not a clinic: we coordinate your assessment with the urologist, the preliminary tests, the surgery and your stay.

Which technique is usually considered for your prostate?
Four factors shape the technique: where you are in your treatment, the volume of your prostate, whether you take anticoagulants and how important it is to you to preserve ejaculation.
1. Where are you in your treatment?
2. Prostate volume on the ultrasound
3. Do you take anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs, such as warfarin, rivaroxaban or clopidogrel?
4. How important is it to preserve ejaculation?

What is laser prostate surgery?
It is an endoscopic surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia, the non-cancerous growth of the gland that narrows the urinary passage. The urologist goes in through the urethra with an instrument fitted with a camera and uses laser energy to remove the obstructing tissue. There are no skin incisions.
There are two main technologies. HoLEP, or holmium laser enucleation, separates the obstructing tissue from the prostate capsule and removes it whole; it works for any size. Green laser photovaporization vaporizes the tissue and is used mainly in medium-sized prostates and in patients who take anticoagulants.
If you would first like to understand the symptoms, the PSA or when to see a doctor, see the page on enlarged prostate and prostate specialists.
When is surgery recommended for an enlarged prostate?
Surgery is not the first step. It is considered when medication is not enough or the prostate is already causing complications.
Symptoms that do not improve
Weak stream, getting up several times at night or a feeling of incomplete emptying, despite medication.
Urinary retention
Being unable to urinate or depending on a catheter is one of the clearest reasons for surgery.
Complications
Recurring urinary infections or blood in the urine, bladder stones or kidney damage caused by the obstruction.
HoLEP, green laser or TURP
All three are performed through the urethra, with no skin incisions. They differ in the prostate size they suit, in how bleeding is managed and in price.
