Prostate and urinary tract checkup, with an option without a rectal exam
The urological checkup brings together, in a single visit, the consultation with the urologist and the basic tests of the prostate, kidneys and bladder. The checkup tests and what each one is for
Consultation with the urologist
Reviews your symptoms, your history and the results, and decides whether any additional test is needed.
Men and women
Prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
A blood test that helps monitor the prostate. A high value does not mean cancer, but it indicates further evaluation.
Men
Urinary tract ultrasound
Evaluates the kidneys, the bladder and, in men, the size of the prostate, without radiation.
Men and women
Urinalysis and creatinine
The urine test looks for infection or blood; creatinine reflects how well the kidneys work.
Men and women
Uroflowmetry
Measures the strength of the urine stream, without catheters. It helps detect obstruction caused by the prostate.
Men
Prostate MRI (optional)
A detailed imaging study of the prostate, useful when the PSA is high or there is a family history.
Premium option, about COP 1,200,000
Prostate checkup without a rectal exam
Fear of the digital rectal exam leads many men to postpone their prostate checkup. In the option without a rectal exam, the assessment relies on PSA, the urinary tract ultrasound and uroflowmetry.
If, because of a finding, the urologist considers the rectal exam or an additional test necessary, it is explained to you during the consultation and you decide.
How often? American Cancer Society recommendation
Talk with your doctor about PSA testing starting at age 50.
If your father or a brother had prostate cancer before age 65.
If several close relatives had it at an early age.
With urinary symptoms, a consultation is recommended at any age.
When to see a urologist? Signs in women
Three or more urinary tract infections in a year, or two in six months.
Urine leakage when coughing, exercising or with a sudden urge to urinate.
Blood in the urine, even if it happened only once.
Kidney stones and flank pain are also reasons to see a urologist.
Urological checkup for women
Urology also cares for women. Recurring urinary tract infections, urine leakage and kidney stones are common reasons for consultation, and they are often postponed in the belief that they are normal.
The women's checkup brings together the consultation with the urologist, urinalysis, creatinine and the urinary tract ultrasound. If there is urine leakage, the urologist may complete it with a urodynamic study; the uterus and ovaries are checked in the annual gynecological checkup.
Urological, cancer screening or executive checkup
They are different checkups. Choose according to what you want to check.
