What is ABPM and what is ambulatory blood pressure monitoring used for?
ABPM (Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring) is a portable device that automatically records blood pressure over 24 hours while the patient goes about their normal life: working, eating, resting, and sleeping. It makes it possible to detect hidden or masked hypertension (normal in the office but high in daily life), evaluate the effectiveness and duration of antihypertensive medications, and analyze the nighttime blood pressure pattern (dipper vs. non-dipper). Unlike isolated measurements taken in the office or at home, ABPM provides an average of 40-80 readings that much more accurately reflects the patient's real blood pressure behavior.
