No-scalpel vasectomy in Medellín
Permanent male contraception, outpatient and under local anesthesia
A no-scalpel vasectomy is performed through a tiny puncture, takes about 15 minutes, and you go home the same day. MDE Care is not a clinic: we coordinate the consultation with the urologist, the procedure, the follow-up semen analysis and your stay if you are coming from another city or country.

Is a vasectomy the right decision in your case?
Six questions change the guidance: your age, whether you have children, how firm the decision is, whether your partner knows about it, how you feel about the procedure and your scrotal history.
1. Are you 18 or older?
2. Do you have children?
3. How firm is your decision not to have children in the future?
4. Does your partner know about the decision?
5. How do you feel about the procedure?
6. Have you had surgery, a hernia or a varicocele in the groin or scrotum?

What is a no-scalpel vasectomy?
It is the cutting and sealing of the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles. In the no-scalpel technique, the urologist reaches each tube with a clamp that makes a tiny puncture in the skin instead of an incision. The American Urological Association guideline recommends it as the technique of choice.
The testicles keep producing testosterone, and erection, desire and orgasm do not change. Semen still comes out the same way; it simply no longer carries sperm.
It is considered a permanent method and does not cause immediate sterility: a follow-up semen analysis is needed to confirm the result. If you wish to have children in the future, there is microsurgical vasectomy reversal, although it does not always work.

Who can have a vasectomy?
It is a personal decision. These are the criteria the AUA guideline and Colombian law use to guide the consultation.
Good candidate
An adult man who has already decided not to have children or not to have more, and who understands that the method is considered permanent.
A prior conversation is advisable
Men without children or with doubts are at higher risk of regret later. The AUA guideline suggests discussing sperm freezing before the procedure.
Not performed
In anyone under 18: Colombian Law 1412 of 2010 does not allow surgical contraception in minors.
How effective a vasectomy is
It is one of the most effective contraceptive methods; the follow-up semen analysis is what guarantees the result.
Pregnancies in the first year
0.15%
Male sterilization, typical use (CDC, 2014). Compared with 0.5% for tubal ligation.
With confirmed azoospermia
1 in 2,000
Approximate risk of pregnancy once the semen analysis no longer shows sperm (AUA, 2026).
Failure requiring a repeat
Up to 1%
Of vasectomies need to be repeated because of a failure of occlusion (AUA, 2026).
First semen analysis
8 weeks
From that point the follow-up sample can be submitted (AUA, 2026).
The first days after a vasectomy
By stage
The same day
Home
It is performed in the office under local anesthesia and you go home the same day.
Day 1
Work without physical effort
You can return to work the next day if your job does not involve heavy physical effort.
Days 3 to 4
Scrotal support
Worn for 3 to 4 days; a cold compress reduces the swelling, which subsides in about 2 weeks.
Days 3 to 7
Normal activities
Most men return to their usual physical routine within this period.
About one week
Sexual activity
Resumed when you feel ready, usually around one week, using another contraceptive method.
From week 8
Follow-up semen analysis
A sample with no sperm, or with 100,000 or fewer non-motile sperm per milliliter, confirms the result.
Strenuous exercise
Avoid it for at least one month, and in the first days do not lift more than about 4.5 kg (10 lb).
Another method until the check
A vasectomy does not cause immediate sterility: keep using another method until the semen analysis confirms the result.
If motile sperm persist
If they still appear at 6 months, the AUA guideline recommends considering a repeat vasectomy.
Vasectomy risks, in figures
It is a procedure with few complications. These are the figures the American Urological Association guideline asks to explain at the consultation.
Effects and complications
- Symptomatic hematoma or infection1% to 2%
- Chronic scrotal pain affecting quality of life1% to 2%
- Failure of occlusion requiring a repeatUp to 1%
- Pregnancy with confirmed azoospermia1 in 2,000
No link
With prostate cancer
The AUA guideline (2026) states that no causal link has been established between vasectomy and prostate cancer.
Unchanged
Testosterone, erection and orgasm
A vasectomy does not change testosterone production, erection or orgasm.
Less
Hematomas and pain without a scalpel
In the 2014 Cochrane review, the no-scalpel technique had less bleeding, fewer hematomas, less infection and less pain than the incision technique, with the same effectiveness.
No-scalpel vasectomy, conventional vasectomy and tubal ligation
All three are permanent methods. The no-scalpel vasectomy causes the least discomfort and is the fastest; tubal ligation is performed on the woman and requires entering the abdomen.
