Urodynamic Testing in Medellín
The bladder function study, with uroflowmetry
Urodynamic testing evaluates how the bladder fills and how it empties. It is mainly requested to define the treatment of urinary incontinence, overactive bladder and difficulty urinating, and often before surgery. MDE Care is not a clinic: we coordinate the study with the urologist, the preparation and the results appointment.

What is urodynamic testing?
Urodynamic testing is the functional study of the bladder and urethra. While ultrasound shows the shape of the organs, urodynamics measures how they work: how the bladder fills, how much capacity it has, what pressures it reaches and how it empties.
The complete study is performed in stages. It begins with uroflowmetry and continues with cystometry, in which a thin catheter fills the bladder and records pressure, sensation and capacity, followed by the pressure-flow study of emptying. Depending on the case, electromyography is added.
Two thin catheters are used, one through the urethra and one through the rectum. For this reason it is usually described as uncomfortable rather than painful.
Uroflowmetry in Medellín
Uroflowmetry is a simple test that measures the quality of the urine stream. You urinate in private into a device called a flowmeter, which records the volume and the flow rate in milliliters per second. It is non-invasive and does not require anesthesia.
It guides the diagnosis of a weak stream and of obstruction caused by an enlarged prostate, and it is used to monitor a treatment. It is often the first stage of the complete urodynamic study.
Uroflowmetry versus urodynamics
Uroflowmetry
No catheters or anesthesia. Measures the strength and volume of the stream.
Complete urodynamic study
With thin catheters. Measures bladder filling, capacity, pressures and emptying.
Uroflowmetry is usually quoted with the urology consultation, from COP 220,000 to COP 300,000.
When is urodynamic testing requested?
The type of incontinence or voiding difficulty defines the treatment. That is why the study comes before any procedure.
Urinary incontinence
To distinguish stress, urge and mixed incontinence, which are treated differently.
Overactive bladder
When sudden urges to urinate do not improve with the initial treatment.
Difficulty urinating
Weak stream or incomplete emptying, to distinguish an obstruction from a bladder that contracts weakly.
Before surgery
For incontinence or the prostate, to confirm that the procedure matches the problem.
Neurological conditions and diabetes
When they may be affecting how the bladder works.
Follow-up
To evaluate the result of a previous treatment.
What to bring and how to prepare
Order and previous tests
The medical order and a recent ultrasound and urinalysis, if you have them.
Bladder diary
A two or three day record of when and how much you urinate and when leakage occurs, if it was requested.
Medication list
Some medications affect the bladder: the urologist will tell you whether any should be suspended.
We confirm the exact preparation when scheduling, according to the center and the stages of the study.
