What is sclerotherapy and how does it work?
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that involves injecting a sclerosing agent (polidocanol or sodium tetradecyl sulfate, generally in foam form -sclerotherapy foam-) directly into varicose veins. The sclerosing agent irritates the vascular endothelium, causes the vein to collapse, and leads to its subsequent absorption by the body. There are two main modalities. Liquid sclerotherapy is used for spider veins and very small telangiectasias. Foam sclerotherapy (a mixture of the sclerosing agent with air or CO2) is used for medium-caliber varicose veins, as the foam displaces blood and increases contact with the vein wall. The duplex Doppler ultrasound-guided technique allows deeper veins to be treated with greater precision.
