What is a thyroid ultrasound and what is it used for?
A thyroid ultrasound is the first-choice imaging study for evaluating the thyroid gland and the structures of the neck. It uses high-frequency linear transducers (7-15 MHz) that produce high-resolution images of the thyroid gland, the right and left thyroid lobes, the isthmus, and the adjacent cervical lymph nodes. With color Doppler, the radiologist evaluates the vascularity of the gland and any detected nodules. The report includes the TI-RADS (Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System) classification for each nodule, which guides the decision to perform a fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) or simply schedule ultrasound follow-up. The exam takes between 15 and 20 minutes, requires no fasting or special preparation, and is completely painless.
