What is nasofibolaryngoscopy and what is it used for?
Nasofibolaryngoscopy (NFS or nasofibroscopy) is an endoscopic examination of the upper airway that uses a thin flexible endoscope (3-4 mm in diameter) with built-in fiber optics. It is gently inserted through the nasal passage using local anesthetic spray and allows sequential visualization of: the nasal passages and turbinates, the rhinopharyngeal cavity (adenoids in children), the oropharynx, the base of the tongue, the epiglottis, the vocal cords, and the supraglottis. Its most common indications include: evaluation of dysphonia (hoarseness), vocal nodules or polyps, vocal cord paralysis, suspected pharyngeal or laryngeal tumors, evaluation of dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), chronic nasal obstruction, sleep apnea (to visualize the level of obstruction), posterior-origin epistaxis, postoperative follow-up of laryngeal surgery, and evaluation of children with snoring or mouth breathing.
