Retina specialist in Medellín
The retina specialist who handles emergencies, finds the cause of what you are seeing and decides whether you need laser, injections or surgery
A retina specialist, or retinologist, is an ophthalmologist with subspecialty training in the retina and vitreous, the back of the eye. They treat retinal detachment, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, epiretinal membrane and macular hole. With the retina, time matters: some symptoms cannot wait for a scheduled appointment. MDE Care is not a clinic: we arrange your consultation with the retina specialist, your tests and your treatment in Medellín.

What a retina specialist does
A retina specialist is an ophthalmologist who, after their specialty, trained in the retina and vitreous: the layer at the back of the eye that receives the image, and the clear gel around it.
A general ophthalmologist spots many of these problems and refers you on. The retina specialist is the one who confirms the cause with imaging, handles retina emergencies and performs the treatments: laser, injections inside the eye and surgery.
So if you were told "there is something on your retina", or you have diabetes and have never had a fundus exam, the appointment you need is with a retina specialist.
Subspecialty in retina and vitreous
Training on top of ophthalmology, focused on the back of the eye.
Diagnosis with imaging
Dilated fundus exam, OCT and, when needed, angiography or ocular ultrasound.
Treatment and emergencies
Retinal laser, intravitreal injections and minimally invasive vitrectomy, including when the case cannot wait.
Conditions a retina specialist treats
Each condition has its own treatment. The retina specialist decides it after examining your retina.
Retinal detachment
Eye emergency
The retina pulls away from the wall of the eye. It usually gives warning with a sudden burst of floaters or flashes and a spreading shadow. The sooner it is treated, the better the visual outcome tends to be.
How it is treated: vitrectomy or scleral buckle, depending on the case.
See vitrectomyDiabetic retinopathy
Diabetes damages the blood vessels of the retina and can progress without symptoms. That is why a fundus exam is part of diabetes care.
How it is treated: systemic control of diabetes, laser, anti-VEGF injections and, in advanced cases, vitrectomy.
Macular degeneration (AMD)
It affects the macula, the area of central vision you use to read and recognise faces. It can cause wavy lines or a spot in the centre.
How it is treated: anti-VEGF intravitreal injections.
Epiretinal membrane and macular hole
They distort central vision: straight lines look wavy or a gap appears in the centre.
How it is treated: vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling.
When surgery is needed, minimally invasive pars plana vitrectomy is performed in Medellín, with 23G, 25G and 27G instruments.

Urgent guidanceWhat the retina specialist consultation is like
