* Guidance only, not a diagnosis. Sleep apnea is confirmed only with a sleep study read by the specialist.
What a polysomnography is and what it is for
A polysomnography, also called a sleep study or full physiological sleep study, records several signals from your body at the same time while you sleep: brain activity, eye and leg movements, airflow through the nose and mouth, breathing effort, snoring, oxygen saturation and heart rhythm.
With all those signals together the specialist can see how many times you stop breathing per hour, how far your oxygen drops and in which sleep stage it happens. It is the reference exam to confirm sleep apnea and to measure how severe it is.
It does not hurt and uses no needles: the sensors are attached to the skin with gentle adhesives and removed in the morning.
What your sleep study can detect
- Obstructive sleep apneaBreathing pauses, loud snoring and oxygen drops during the night.
- Insomnia and fragmented sleepRepeated awakenings and little deep sleep.
- Restless legs syndromePeriodic leg movements that interrupt your rest.
- Excessive sleepiness and narcolepsyStudied together with the multiple sleep latency test the following day.
- Bruxism and parasomniasAbnormal behaviour during the night, such as talking or walking in your sleep.
How to prepare for your polysomnography
These are general recommendations. When you book we send you the exact instructions from the assigned sleep clinic and the ones your doctor gave you.
No coffee or alcohol that day
Avoid coffee, energy drinks and alcohol from the afternoon, and try not to nap: they alter the sleep recording.
Arrive with clean, dry hair
No gel, creams or oils on your scalp or skin, so the sensors stay attached all night.
Bring your pyjamas and sleeping things
Comfortable two-piece pyjamas, toiletries and, if you use one, your usual pillow. You will spend the night at the clinic.
Bring your referral and your medication
Bring the referral, the list of medication you take and previous sleep studies if you have had any.

Everything about polysomnography in Medellín
How much does a polysomnography cost in Medellín?+
In Medellín an in-lab polysomnography ranges from COP 650,000 to COP 950,000, and the home sleep apnea test, the simplified version to study apnea sleeping in your own bed, from COP 380,000 to COP 550,000. Polysomnography with CPAP titration and the multiple sleep latency test cost more. These are guide prices: you can work out yours in the calculator on this page and confirm it on WhatsApp based on the study you were referred for and the assigned sleep clinic.
What is a polysomnography?+
It is the reference diagnostic study for sleep disorders. It simultaneously records brain electrical activity, eye movements, muscle activity, blood oxygenation, nasal and oral airflow, chest and abdominal movements, and motor behavior throughout the night.
Which disorders does a polysomnography diagnose?+
It is the most complete and objective method for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea, determining its severity and guiding treatment. It also diagnoses restless legs syndrome, parasomnias such as sleepwalking and night terrors, REM behavior disorder and alterations in sleep architecture.
Where and how is the study performed?+
It is performed in specialized sleep laboratories, with high-resolution equipment and the supervision of a certified technician throughout the night. When you book, we send you the instructions to follow before the study.
Who interprets the results?+
A specialist neurologist interprets the data recorded during the night and issues a complete diagnostic report, which is what guides the treatment.
How long does it take and do I have to sleep there?+
Yes, the in-lab polysomnography is done over a full night: you arrive in the evening, the technician places the sensors in about 30 to 45 minutes and 6 to 8 hours of sleep are recorded. In the morning the sensors are removed and you leave. The home sleep apnea test is slept in your own bed and you return the device the next day.
Does a polysomnography hurt?+
No. It is a painless, non-invasive exam: no needles and no medication. The sensors are attached to the skin and scalp with gentle adhesives and removed in the morning. You can move in bed and go to the bathroom by letting the technician know.
How do I prepare for a polysomnography?+
Avoid coffee, energy drinks and alcohol from the afternoon onwards and do not nap that day. Arrive with clean, dry hair, without gel or creams, and bring comfortable pyjamas, toiletries, your referral and the list of medication you take. When you book we send you the exact instructions for your sleep clinic.
When are the sleep study results delivered?+
The report is usually delivered 3 to 5 business days after the study, because the specialist has to review and score the full night of recording. You receive the interpreted report, with the apnea-hypopnea index and the recommendations for your treating doctor.
Do I need a referral for a polysomnography?+
Yes, the sleep study is performed with a referral stating the type of polysomnography. If you do not have one yet, we first arrange an assessment with the sleep neurologist, who defines which study suits your case and issues the referral.
