What an endocrinologist does
Endocrinology is the medical specialty of the hormonal system and metabolism: the thyroid, the pancreas, the adrenal glands, the pituitary gland, the parathyroid glands and the sex glands. An endocrinologist diagnoses and treats the diseases that appear when a gland produces too much or too little hormone, as well as metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity.
Their work relies on the consultation, laboratory tests and some imaging. Most treatments involve medication, dose adjustments and follow-up. When a problem requires surgery, such as a thyroid nodule that needs it or bariatric surgery, the endocrinologist evaluates it and refers you to the surgeon.
Endocrinologist or internist
An internist provides comprehensive care for adults and manages many chronic conditions; you see an endocrinologist when the hormonal or metabolic problem is at the center of the case or is not under control.
Endocrinologist and bariatric surgeon
The endocrinologist evaluates the hormonal and metabolic causes of weight gain and treats obesity with medication. Bariatric surgery is recommended and performed by the bariatric surgeon.
No referral needed
For a private consultation, you can book the appointment directly. You only need your ID and any test results you already have.

When to see an endocrinologist
- Your fasting glucose came back at 100 mg/dL or higher, or your hemoglobin A1c at 5.7% or higher.
- You have diabetes and are not reaching your targets with your current treatment.
- You were found to have a thyroid nodule or you notice a lump in your neck. With persistent hoarseness or a fast-growing lump, do not postpone your consultation.
- Your TSH came back high or low, or you have fatigue, feel cold, or have palpitations or tremor with no clear cause.
- You have obesity and want to know whether there is a hormonal cause or which medical treatment can help you.
- You have irregular periods, acne or excess hair, or high prolactin.
- You had a fracture from a minor fall, or you are a woman aged 65 or older who has never had a bone density scan.
- Your blood pressure stays high on three medications, or a scan showed an adrenal nodule.
Go to the emergency room, not to a consultation
- Intense thirst and frequent urination along with vomiting, confusion, drowsiness or rapid breathing.
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing because of a lump in the neck.
Not sure whether your case is one for an endocrinologist?
Use the guide or, if you have several chronic conditions, see chronic disease management with internal medicine.
Checkups you should not skip
- Hemoglobin A1c, stable diabetesTwice a year
- Dilated eye exam, with diabetesEvery 1 or 2 years
- TSH, stable hypothyroidismOnce a year
If your concern is weight
The endocrinologist rules out hormonal causes, such as hypothyroidism or polycystic ovary syndrome, treats diabetes and other related conditions, and can prescribe weight-loss medication. If your case calls for surgery, the recommendation and the procedure belong to the bariatric surgeon.
Non-surgical weight-loss treatment
Prescription medication, a nutrition plan and follow-up visits.
Surgery assessment and requirements
BMI of 40 or higher; 35 or higher with a related condition; 30 to 35 with a metabolic disease, evaluated case by case.
