Dr. Francisco Lopera, MDE Care's allied physician in Medellín for Behavioral Neurology Patients, received this past weekend the "Potamkin Prize for Research in Pick's, Alzheimer's and Related Disorders" in Denver, Colorado, from the American Brain Foundation at its annual "Commitment to Cures Awardees" awards ceremony.
The American Brain Foundation is committed to discovering the treatments and cures for brain diseases, disorders, and injuries that will shape the future of neurological conditions. They are guided by the belief that a single breakthrough in one area of research could improve our understanding of numerous related conditions, paving the way for better treatments, early diagnosis opportunities, and, ultimately, cures.
This year's recipient was Dr. Lopera, the first Latin American physician to be awarded this distinction. The Potamkin Prize committee honors Dr. Francisco Lopera for his extraordinary contributions to understanding the causes, prevention, treatments, and cures of Alzheimer's disease. His research over the past forty years has been devoted to examining the genotypes and phenotypes of large Colombian families affected by Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Lopera is also the founder and director of the Neurosciences Group at the University of Antioquia in Medellin, Colombia. With more than 270 publications and numerous awards, including the Winblad Lifetime Achievement Award from the U.S. Alzheimer's Association, his work has significantly advanced the field of Alzheimer's research.
Luba Potamkin's granddaughter presents the Potamkin Prize to Dr. Francisco Lopera
Luba Potamkin's granddaughter, who was responsible for presenting the award, spoke not only of Dr. Lopera's scientific achievements, but also of his humanity: "When I first heard about Dr. Francisco Lopera, I also learned how deeply the entire scientific community reveres his contributions to this field. He is universally beloved, and if you have the opportunity to speak with him this afternoon, you will immediately understand why. His warmth radiates compassion (...) I am not exaggerating when I say that Dr. Francisco Lopera has changed the world. But for me, as a family member, and not as a scientist, it is the services that Dr. Lopera provides that go far beyond anything I have ever seen. He visits every home, knows the name of every person, breaks bread with these families, personally educating them about what is happening in real time..."
MDE Care is honored to have on its staff physicians like Dr. Lopera, who confirm that Medellin - Colombia is truly an outstanding city for those seeking excellence in medical treatments, genuine human support, and warmth. Congratulations, Dr. Lopera, and thank you for a lifetime dedicated to research and commitment!
