Types of neurological diseases

There are numerous neurological diseases, each with its own characteristics and challenges. Some of the most common include:

Neurodegenerative diseases.

This group of disorders includes diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's disease, which involve the progressive deterioration of nerve cells and brain function.

Movement disorders

Here are diseases such as Parkinson's, Tourette's syndrome and dystonia, which affect the body's ability to perform voluntary movements in a smooth and coordinated manner.

Cerebrovascular disorders.

They include strokes, cerebral aneurysms and cerebral hemorrhages, which occur when the blood supply to the brain is compromised, which can lead to brain damage and disability.

Neuromuscular disorders.

These affect the connection between nerves and muscles, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and muscular dystrophy, causing muscle weakness and loss of function.

What types of methods and techniques are used in research projects?

Among the most common methods are observational studies, which involve direct observation of neurological phenomena in natural or controlled settings. 

Experimental studies, on the other hand, involve the manipulation of variables to investigate the causes and effects of neurological disorders. Other studies involve:

  • Neuroimaging techniques, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), are used to visualize brain structure and function in real time. 
  • Electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) allow the electrical activity of the brain to be recorded with high temporal precision.
  • Genomics and proteomics, which study gene expression and proteins related to neurological diseases. 
  • Neuropsychology, which examines the relationship between the brain and behavior.
  • Neurostimulation, which uses electrical or magnetic stimulation to modulate brain activity.

It is crucial to consider the reputation of the research team and the institution to which they belong. Check if the study has been published in recognized scientific journals and if it has gone through a rigorous peer review process. Observe the methodology used and the clarity in the presentation of results. It also verifies whether the study is supported by reliable sources of funding and whether it complies with ethical and regulatory standards.

It is composed of a multidisciplinary team of professionals, including neuroscientists, neurologists, clinical researchers, biologists, psychologists, statisticians and other experts in related areas. In general, research projects can last from a few months to several years. For example, an observational study may be completed in a few months, while a randomized controlled clinical trial may extend over several years to recruit participants, conduct interventions, and perform long-term follow-ups. Participants are expected to meet certain requirements and commitments. These include providing informed consent to participate in the study, complying with established protocols for data collection, attending scheduled visits, and completing questionnaires or neurological tests as required by the study. In addition, participants are expected to follow the principal investigator's instructions and to report any changes in their health status or circumstances that may affect their participation in the study.
